The Regulations bring into force the EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC) on the provision and use of safety signs at work. The purpose of the Directive is the standardisation and use of safety signs throughout the European Community, thus ensuring that all health and safety signs, wherever they are seen, have the same meaning.
Under the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997, any non-automatic fire fighting equipment should be indicated with a fire fighting sign and the locations of all fire fighting equipment should be clearly identify. The signage should conform to the Health and Safety Signs and Signals Regulations - BS 5499-1.
The Regulations also cover other means of communicating information regarding health and safety. The Regulations include the use of illuminated signs, hand and acoustic signals (e.g. fire alarms), spoken communication and the marking of pipe work, which are used for dangerous substances. Fire safety signs (i.e. signs for fire exits and fire-fighting equipment) are also covered.
